Jane Burnley

Born in Manchester, Jane Burnley trained in graphic design at Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to work as a graphic designer and illustrator in London. She moved to North Yorkshire in 1989 and started to paint in the late 90s, first exhibiting in 1998. Over time her work began to change, becoming more abstract as she found herself drawn to a more intuitive way of working.

Jane's two main inspirations are colour and landscape. She says: "I work quickly, generally in acrylics, building up layers and creating texture. I often apply oil pastel underneath the paint and scratch through to the colour below. I find this not only exciting but very therapeutic!"

Jane also produces mixed media pieces, monoprints, and more spiritual work. She is currently working on some board books, which she says are "quite different from my usual one-off paintings". She regularly participates in North Yorkshire Open Studios and will be exhibiting again in 2023.

Giuliana Lazzerini

Giuliana Lazzerini was born in Seravezza near Pietrasanta in Tuscany. She studied at the Istituto D'Arte Stagio Stagi in Pietrasanta, gaining a Master of Arts Diploma, and at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara. She moved to the UK in 1973 and lives in Yorkshire.

The Tuscan landscape and childhood memories bear a strong influence on the artist's current work. In an earlier statement, she describes her first encounters with art in Italy as a child in her father's mosaic studio. These early perceptions, several years on, provide a language and a vocabulary for her pictures in terms of colour, surface, and scale, which she uses in the construction of her tapestry-like, interlocking, angular-surfaced village landscapes.

"My work is varied and often developed from an idea encountered during a journey that takes me in an unknown territory where I grow as an artist," says Giuliana. "I usually work in small series of paintings, where memory and imagination come to interplay. Time made me more familiar with the English Northern landscape and it finally has left a mark in some of my work, as I become more intrigued by its drama and atmosphere."

Karen Turner

Living and working in Yorkshire, Karen Turner is passionate about its beautiful countryside, rugged coastline, historic cities and working fishing villages, which she says all have their own individual charm and give endless inspiration to an artist.

"I have always been drawn to the sea and love to paint it with the fluid, often unpredictable qualities of watercolour and inks on paper," says Karen. "I also enjoy creating using big brushes and the colourful opaque effects of acrylic paint on wood, capturing marine life and other animals in my unique style. Exploring with colour and bold mark making, I work in a semi-abstract naive style, capturing the landscape, wildlife and other aspects of the inspirational natural world."

Karen loves to create art which makes people smile, adding a splash of colour and brightness to everyday life.
