Barbara Rae was born in 1943 in Falkirk, Scotland. She is a highly acclaimed painter whose work has been widely shown in Scotland, South Africa, Norway, Australia, Spain, Italy, California, New Mexico and Washington DC. She studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, where she was awarded a travel scholarship, and went on to lecture in Drawing and Painting at the Glasgow School of Art. Her first solo show was held in 1967 at the New 57 Gallery, Edinburgh. Having won the the Guthrie medal and the Sir William Gillies Travel Award, she was made a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1992. In 1996 she became a Royal Academician, and she was was awarded a CBE in 1999.
Barbara’s printmaking has been integral to her artistic activity since her student days. The discipline imposed by this media creates possibilities for her which stimulate her vision of the world, whether she is painting, producing silkscreen prints, or simply observing.
